Q&A "Behcet Syndrome”(白塞)

 Question:

Behcet’s Syndrome” is a powerful and moving documentary about an incurable inflammatory immune disease which affects multiple parts of the body. What made you want to make a film about this disease?

Answer:

I think rare diseases are a good subject. The documentary "Behcet Syndrome" is about a rare disease, and I prefer to make films with multiple meanings, such as social, historical and creative. In addition, there is no cure or comprehensive treatment for this disease, and there is an urgent need for pharmaceutical companies to develop this medicine to improve the quality of life of it’s sufferers. We healthy people can learn from the positive and optimistic attitude of people with Behcet Syndrome by watching this short film, in addition, it will make us cherish our own lives. The significance of the film is that it is the first documentary about Behcet Syndrome in the world, which is a milestone. The development of Behcet Syndrome is like a movie, the audience does not know which direction the plot of the movie will go next, and we do not know which direction the treatment of this disease will go.

Question:

Does ignorance and misunderstanding about this disease make life for it’s victims more difficult?

Answer:

Yes! Because this disease can cause various symptoms, such as someone's lower body ulcerated, Behcet syndrome has been misdiagnosed as AIDS (around which there is still a lot of prejudice and misunderstanding), which will cause great distress to the patient as they’ll be discriminated against. This disease is a lifelong affliction, it is difficult to cure, it’s hard for sufferers to form long-term relationships, there are many divorces because of this. Some young people have this disease, and many are afraid that it is hereditary, so starting families is also a difficult thing.

Question:

Behcet’s Syndrome” director Pang Guolin is a professor at at Chengjian University as well as a film maker. Is it difficult to find time to make films when you also have a full time job?

Answer:

University teachers don't sit in class, so they have more free time. I have about 2 to 3 classes a week, and the rest of my time is freer to create films. In addition, there are summer and winter vacations in college, which are more free time, so there is plenty of time for film creation. What I lack most is not time, but money, because I lack the fame and connections to get funding.

Question:

What inspired you to make movies? What influences do you have as a film maker?

Answer

Because I like watching movies very much, and I also like creating movies. A work being recognized by others, and at the same time influencing others and inspiring them to get out of their difficulties, I think it is a very noble thing and a very meaningful thing. Whenever I am in a bad mood, I will go to the movies and it will lift my spirits. I hope the movies I make will also have this effect and can help people overcome trouble, become happy and feel better.

Question:

As an educator, how important is film as an educational tool? Is film useful in helping people to learn and understand new things?

Answer

Film is very important as an educational tool because it is not simply didactic, but subtle and silent, which is more advanced and effective compared to simple didactic-ism. Film is useful in helping people learn and understand new things, it will be memorable, it will go deeper and speak in a more original way. The director will offer new content in a new form, and I've always been more concerned with making films with new forms and new content, trying not to compromise!
